Yes that is its name!LOL Had a bit if a laugh about it with my rheumy. Anyway, I have an appointment with the podiatric surgeon in the rheumatology department tomorrow to discuss options. I need to do something as it is causing me to walk with my foot at a funny angle which is causing problems in my ankle. Has anyone have any experience of this condition and treatment options. I like to research things before appointments so I can ask relevant questions and understand what they are talking about but I can find very little on the Internet about this. Any experiences of this condition and treatment gratefully received.

Thank you
Becky

Hi Becky
I had my bunion 'done ' back in May. One of the reasons was because I knew I was't walking 'properly' and I was getting pain in other parts of my foot as well. The operation wasn't nearly as bad as I expected but I still have to remember to put my foot up at intervals during the day and walking on rough ground can be uncomfortable. I hope to get the other one done before Xmas.
I still keep admiring my lovely straight toesBigGrin and live in hope that I might even be able to get some pretty shoes next year. Wouldn't that be nice!
Good luck
Sue

Thank you for your reply. Wearing pretty shoes - now that would be nice! unfortunately for me even if I get the toe fixed I think that would be unlikely. I am glad your foot is healing well and hope the second one is successful too. Has the operation helped reduce the pain in the other parts of the foot?

From what I can work out (and see!) a bunion pushes your big toe in, a cock up toe pushes your big toe up in the air. Because you get most of your propulsion from your big toe when you walk I am turning my whole foot in to get the big toe on the grown to push off with, hence the ankle problems. Most the literature on the internet seems to be about Cock up toe being a complication of Bunion surgery and how to prevent it. I can't see much on how you treat it if it is not as a result of bunion surgery.

I'm really hoping there will be a quick straight forward way to fix it (preferably non-surgical) as I don't have time for a long recovery period! Oh well - I'll find out tomorrow.

Jane.

Hiya Becky

I had my left foot bunion & 2 toes straightened 20/6/2012 at gwh with a scrummy surgeon called JulianLove
My body takes a while to recover from operations.

I say go for it because it re-shapes the foot, so in the long run the foot looks lovely!

One thing I would say is: I wanted to stay awake so Julian (ding dong eye candy) injected x6 jabs in my foot to partial numb the area i felt all injections BUT that was the worst bit!

Glad that I could take my iPod to chill!

See what they say!
Good luck
Jane

My appointment tomorrow is with a Mr M Chichero at GWH. I'll let you know if he's good looking. Will certainly make the process more bearable if he is!Laugh It doesn't look too bad, you probably wouldn't notice unless I told you (in fact even I didn't realise that was the problem for quite a long time). But I think I need to do something to stop the pain and possible damage it is causing in my ankle. I'm going with an open mind. Hopefully surgery won't be necessary but if it is then I'll just have to get on with it. The trouble is I have 3 holidays booked in the next 6 months (never done anything like that before!) so really haven't got time for long recovery periods. Not to mention 2 lively children (7 & 3).

How long was your recovery time after your bunion surgery?

PS was Julian Australian? GWH seem to have a steady stream of Australian Podiatric surgeons who stay for about a year.

Hiya Becky

No Julian the stallion wasn't from Australia! Lol
My advice with holidays is...if your op can wait then have the holidays first. Recover was 3 months with flare as well.
I found foot surgery more limiting like walking/driving.

Once you go into gwh pot after seeing the surgeon they give a timescale of within 18 weeks but my last two experiences are within 12 weeks.

I just want to say its up to you! You get two dates (can change the first date) but if you make the 2nd appointment then it gets bounced back to your gp. Crazy I know!

We will have to arrange to meet upSmile if you would like to?

Hope your visit went well today.
Jane

Well yesterday didn't happen. Had a phone call just before lunch to say Mr Chichero had gone home ill so they would have to cancel my appointment. They offered me an appointment on 6th August but that's when we are on holiday. Then he goes on holiday so can't get an appointment until 27th August.

Any way had a very pleasant afternoon instead. Schools here finished yesterday at 1.00 for the summer (for some reason Oxfordshire always finishes at the end of term with a half day) and at school pick up a few mums suggested we went to local pub which has a big garden. So spent all afternoon in the pub garden chatting. Then most piled back to my house (by which time most other halves had joined us) and we had a curry take away. I like that sort of impromptu party no preparation, I just sat down and told people where to find plates, glasses etc. Then they cleared everything away before they left. I feel so lucky to have such a great network of friends around me.

Jane I would love to meet up. Are you on Facebook? If so search for me and PM me. I used to be the only Becky Peal on Facebook but I think their might be a few more now. If so I'm the one with a pink ski jacket sitting in the snow next to a little boy in a green ski jacket.

Ooooo I think it's almost worth wonky foot pain to catch a glimpse of mr stallion ;)
Yum!
Eye candy on the Nhs... As its meant to be

I've seen the foot surgery team a few months ago and they are thinking about swapping ligaments about, this will stop them bending on the edges.

Tbh, I'm having my knee done first
Then see if my feet straighten up a bit once that alignment is sorted more.

Plus I'm a bit squeamish when it comes to feet

Hi all, I am planning to talk about feet at my next app. this month!!Smile
I have a bunion and hammer toe on my right foot, left one is starting but not so bad.
I am having ankle pain and am wondering if its to do with toe deformity, so its interesting for me to hear that you think the same.
When I get up after resting, day and night, I find that I am walking on the side of my foot because my ankle is too painful for my foot to go flat for a while.
I have only recently decided to have a knee replacement and living in Wales the waiting list is 36 weeks!! So that wont be until next year.
But with this ankle problem now, I'm wondering if that is more imp. at the moment. I get boggled just thinking about it all, and wanting to keep as mobile as possible.
Wondering if anyone who has had toe surgery noticed problems with ankles and whether surgery helped.Smile

I saw the podiatric surgeon on Tuesday. I have escaped surgery Smile (for now anyway!). His conclusion was that my middle foot is collapsing which is causing the pain in my ankle and could be responsible for my toe sticking up. He put a lot of padding under the insole i already have to support my middle foot and is referring me back to the biomechanics department to get a more permanent support for my middle foot. He hopes that if the middle foot is supported properly the toe will drop by itself (and the ankle pain stop). However he did warn me that my toe joint is very arthritic so it might not come down by itself.

Well, sorry to smile at your expense and your pain but your reference to your middle foot made me smile. So you must be Jake's sister? You know the one with extra leg tiddle iddle iddle pom?

Good to hear that surgery is not on the cards, at least yet.

Ha ha Smile. He was referring to the middle of my left foot ! Luckily I don't have three feet. Two cause me enough problems.
